Thread: Trusted Resources

    Trusted Resources

Following you will find resources that we use and trust in our other online businesses. The thing you will quickly realize with online business is there are about a billion products, ebooks and services out there claiming to be the end all when it comes to making money. The sad truth is 99 percent of them stink. With this in mind, we’ve put together this list regarding services and products you can actually count on.

As a matter of transparency, you should know these are all affiliate links and we make money off of any purchases that you make. Hey, we’ve got to pay the bills for this behemoth. In truth, we could list thousands of programs that would pay us on here, but we just list the ones we know work. More than a few of these do not pay us [Adsense for example], but we feel it is better you just assume they all do. You can always skip the affiliate links by just searching for the particular offering on Google.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
We’re not going to lie to you. You are not going to make $50,000 in the next 30 minutes with internet marketing. You are going to have to work at it just like everything else. When the grind starts getting to you a bit, this is the book that will make all the difference. As the name suggests, it is all about how to create a 4 hour work week and, as you might guess, the web is a great way to do it. Highly recommended for when you need inspiration.

    Domain Registrars:

There are a zillion domain registrars out there. Network Solutions is the oldest, but we also consider it a rip-off with prices that are obscenely high. GoDaddy and NameCheap are some of the cheapest around. We recommend you don’t buy any of the accessories they try to sell you. Stick to domains and you’ll do fine with these two.

Your site is only as good as its ability to be seen by visitors. When starting out, BlueHost.com and HostGator.com are two of the best out there. They are cheap and very newbie friendly.

    Keyword Research:

    Market Samurai

    Google Adwords Keyword Tool

Your entire online business is based on accurate keyword research. There are many programs out there. These three are generally considered the top dogs, but the field is pretty murky these days. Google Adwords Tool is free, but it can be a bit tricky to use and it doesn’t return long tail keyword phrases [more than three words]. WordTracker used to be the best program by far, but it has lost some of its luster. We still use it with mixed results. The dominant program by far these days is Marketing Samurai. It not only identifies keywords for you, but it will analyze them as well to show you which are the easiest to rank for. That being said, the program can be a bit buggy. Still, one has to use something.

    Site Design/Software:

You should always be trying to build a list of people you can send things to. Aweber is perhaps the best way to do it. It provides you with modules to get people to sign up and a program to send out mailings. It can be a way to make huge money. If you build a list of 10,000 people, you can drop a mailing for something unique and reap instant cash from doing so. You should always include this on your sites.

    - WordPress Web Design For Dummies

    - WooThemes.com

    - The Thesis Theme for WordPress

You will love Wordpress once you get the hang of using it. Having said that, figuring out the ins and outs can be a bit frustrating. The Dummies book on the subject is actually very good and makes for a good reference.

The second problem you will have with Wordpress is the theme issue. Most of the free ones are…how shall I say this…terrible. Even the decent ones are problematic because they usually contain hidden links to sites of the designers choice, links you probably don’t want coming from your site. Fortunately, WooThemes gives you a quick and easy way to buy nicely designed themes. ThesisThemes is even better. It allows you to really customize your themes so that they are completely unique.

    Money Makers

    Google Adsense

    Link Building

When it comes to link building, these three tools are invaluable. Generally, you do not want to use them to link directly to your site. Instead, you want to build other properties that link to your site and then use these tools to link to those other properties. This creates “link juice”. Picture a pyramid. Your site would be the top and these tools would be used to build the base and funnel up to the tip. Visit our SEO section to learn more.

PRWeb is the dominant press release service. You can send links directly to your money site with this service and see big gains in your rankings.

    Article Video Robot

Article Video Robot is a very cool little tool that lets you convert your article content instantly into videos that are then posted on video sites like YouTube. A great way to get videos up onto major video sites while generating links and traffic back to your site.

    Business Stuff

    Record Keeping

    Turbo Tax - Tax Filings

At it’s core, your online business is, well, a business. This means you have to pay taxes and other unfortunate things like that. The key to keep things from becoming a disaster is to keep records of all your transactions when they happen. There is no secret in this area. Using Quickbooks online is the way to go. It’s something like $8 a month and you can login from anywhere in the world. When it comes time to actually pay taxes, Turbo Tax is the simple way to go until you are making enough money to need a CPA.

That’s it for now. We’ll keeping adding resources as we feel they are relevant.

    Virtual Staff Finder

Virtual Assistants are all the rage these days because they save you a ton of time and are pretty cheap. Finding credible “VA”s, however, can be a real pain in the butt. Virtual Staff Finder basically does the work for you. The business has already gone through the screening process and matches you to people who have the skills to do what you need done. Huge time saver.

Looking for content writers, programmers, web designers or somebody technical? Elance is legend on the web. It is a gathering of freelancers that you can access for your needs. Post your job in detail and watch the bids come in. Review the bidders, identify the one you need and get it done asap and usually for a cut rate price.

oDesk.com is similar to Elance, but with more of a staffing perspective. Let’s say you start a site selling something you create like an ebook. You are going to need someone to handle the customer service. Instead of hiring a full time employee, you can just get someone off oDesk.com to handle it. Much cheaper and you don’t have to pay employment taxes.

Another amazing idea someone came up with. This site works like the previous two as well except all the projects are for graphic design. Got my business cards done here. You just log on, post the job and indicate what you are willing to pay. Graphic designers will then bid on the deal. You can get everything from logo designs to web site graphics to, well, pretty much anything with graphics.
